Dame de Deuil

15 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 119 Mb

Daughter of Hapsburg Emperor Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy, Marguerite of Austria (1480-1530) experienced a series of personal tragedies during the first three decades of her life - including deaths of her only brother and both husbands.
Despite her misfortunes, Marguerite has skillfully ruled The Netherlands for her nephew, Charles V. She is also remembered for her patronage over the arts. Herself a creative personality with literary and musical talents, she has made her court in Mechelen (now Belgium) a mansion of flamboyant Burgundian culture, shortly before its expiration. There she collected books and works or art, among which were such gems as 'Trés riches heures de duc de Berry' by Limbourg brothers or Van Eyck's 'Arnolfini Portrait'.
Some musical manuscripts now in the Bibliothèque Royale in Brussels were probably part of Marguerite's library. These include two songbooks and a handsome collection of courtly bassedanse tenors (foundations for improvised polyphonic dance compositions). All were most likely prepared for Marguerite herself - song collections contain settings of her plaintive texts, and the book of bassedanse tenors reflects her nostalgy for expiring Burgundian glories.

Dresden 1652

27 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 107 Mb

Dresden 1652: music by Christoph Bernhard and Christian Herwich (NCA 60147-210, rec 2004, 64') draw on an important recently discovered score-book at Wolfenbüttel. It is dated 1662, includes instrumental ensemble music ranging from solo gamba and violin pieces to seven- and eight-part sonatas, and was copied by Jakob Ludwig (1623–98), a court musician at Wolfenbüttel and Gotha.
The disc from Hamburger Ratsmusik and Simone Eckert, concentrates on music by two composers who met in Dresden for a court wedding in 1652: the Weimar gamba player Christian Herwich (1609 - 1663) and the Dresden singer Christoph Bernhard (1627 - 1692), a pupil of Schütz.

Maria Bayo - Handel

14 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR Mb

These performances have got nothing if not style--and charisma to burn. And burn is what the first aria does, its fire flaming directly from the mouth of Spanish soprano María Bayo. Is this image too much for you? Well, just listen and you'll be hard-pressed not to come up with a picture of some kind of pyrotechnic activity. Bayo displays some habits I'm not fond of--a sort of "swallowed" quality on some notes, a tendency to push interpretive gestures to the border of the "too-cute" and, in the case of "Lascia ch'io pianga", the overwrought--but forget all of that: this is really magnificent singing accompanied by interpretive instincts that invariably show the true theatrical essence of these wonderful Handel creations. Bayo's orchestral partners are more than able accomplices: these are first rate players who really relish their music and consequently make it live--robustly, vivaciously, and passionately. Bayo sings as if no wild runs or leaping lines are too difficult, and her brief duet passages with various instruments in the cantata Tra le fiamme HWV 170 are impressive bits of virtuosity. The aria "Se pieta" from Giulio Cesare shows how far Bayo will go to inject personality into a piece that otherwise depends only on its considerable melodic loveliness for impact. It's not offensive or tasteless, just, well, characterful, and in this instance it works. Besides the more familiar works, Bayo also treats us to one of Handel's more curious and rarely heard pieces, composed in 1707 during his sojourn in Italy: it's a cantata in Spanish with guitar accompaniment, No se emendará jamás. This is not only a nice programmatic touch, it's a delightful work that, along with the rest of the disc, is well worth hearing. The sound is bright, detailed, and suitably lively for complementing repertoire and singer.

Johann Pachelbel - Easter Cantatas

6 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 126 Mb

While the ubiquitous Canon and Gigue in D refuses to suffer in obscurity--or even to stop reproducing and multiplying like a rampant tumor--recordings devoted to Johann Pachelbel's vocal music are extremely rare. It's a shame because Pachelbel's vocal works are often remarkably heartfelt and stirring. J.S. Bach was certainly impressed. Listen for instance to Pachelbel's richly textured, contrapuntal chorale cantata Christ lag in Todesbanden (Christ lay in the bonds of death) and compare it to Bach's famous later treatment (BWV 4). Bach's harmonic structure and thematic development throughout are remarkably similar to Pachelbel's earlier model. In fact, Pachelbel's subtler, seamless gradations between vocal and instrumental parts arguably heighten the solemn nature of Luther's familiar hymn more effectively than the master. For those who missed Rolf Schweizer's stunning, reverential, and long-deleted performance on Da Camera Magna (with Bachorchester Pforzheim), this leaner, more focused rendering by Roland Wilson with La Capella Ducale and Musica Fiata serves Pachelbel equally well. Like his nearly exact contemporary Heinrich Biber, Pachelbel was regarded in his day as quite the progressive, often extravagantly augmenting his vocal scores with antiphonal choirs and plenty of rousing brass and percussion. Though every work on this program incorporates these elements to some extent, the cantata Halleluja! Lobet den Herrn (Praise the Lord) offers the grandest, most celebratory display. The splendor of this unusually large setting for five trumpets, trombone, timpani, bells, strings, two oboes, harp, dulcian, full concertante and ripieno voices, and basso continuo is further complemented by Pachelbel's frequent use of permutation fugues (two or three contrasting themes played simultaneously in revolving cycles) that Wilson and his forces effortlessly negotiate. The disc's concluding Magnificat in C major, though longer and with slightly less instrumentation, equally impresses.

The Art of Qin Music

The qin (pronounced “chin”; also called guqin, or “ancient qin”) has a unique place in Chinese culture; according to our most accurate information, it has been played in China regularly since the time of Confucius. This would mean its performance tradition goes back at least 2500 years. During that period, the instrument has enjoyed almost unrivalled status. Allusions to its poetic beauty, pristine character, connection with heaven, and even magical properties are found throughout Chinese poetry and literature.

Pierre Robert - En Grands Motets

8 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 118

Uploaded - FileFactory

Chosen by Louis XIV in 1663 to conduct the music of his Chapel, Pierre Robert spent the next twenty years, in alternation with Henry Du Mont, composing the works that accompanied the daily services of the court of France. The creator with Du Mont and Lully, of the grands motets the emblematic genre of a 'French style' admired by all Europe, Robert was one of the last heirs to the great French polyphonic tradition which he brought to a high degree of contrapuntal complexity and rhetorical refinement, as can be seen in his 'Motets pour la chapelle du Roy' published in 1684. Olivier Schneebeli is Director of Les Pages and les Chantres de la Chapelle, the choir of the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. Prior to joining the Centre in 1991, he and William Christie founded the choir of Les Arts Florissants for the modern debut of Lully's Atys.

Il canto delle dame & Caro amor

12 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 93Mb

Four of the composers are Italian women of the 17th century, a most favorable time for their gender if the notes are to be accepted. Recordings of Francesca Caccini (1587–1640), the daughter of composer Giulio Caccini, go back as far as 1969 with Max van Egmond on Telefunken; the nun Isabella Leonarda (1620–1704) was also heard in the LP era ( Fanfare 6: 4), and Barbara Strozzi (1619–after 1674) came next (7:2). Another nun, Caterina Assandra (fl. 1609–18), can be found on several CDs. The notes say nothing about the inclusion of a brief canon by Giovanni Pietro del Buono, who was noted here just recently on a recording. Eight of the dozen works are vocal, an opportunity for Maria Cristina Kiehr to continue the elegant work she has given us, first as an ensemble singer and for more than a decade as a soloist in Baroque music.

“[Kiehr] has achieved in this recital an even greater sensitivity and subtlety of expression than ever before...It is not just the performances that merit an 'IRR Outstanding' rating for this disc. The works selected and the construction of the whole programme testify to Kiehr's and Aymes's exquisite taste and superb artistic judgement.” (Record Review)
