Claudio Monteverdi et al. - Venetian Vespers

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 171Mb

Uploaded - FileFactory

Paul McCreesh's second major recording (and second Gramophone Award winner) reconstructs Vespers for the Feast of the Annunciation at San Marco circa 1643, using music by Monteverdi and contemporaries including Cavalli, Grandi, and Rigatti. The music is less dense and lavishly scored than on A Venetian Coronation, but more virtuosic and varied--ranging from Finetti's sweet, languid "O Maria, quæ rapis" for two falsettists and Monteverdi's lively "Laudate Dominum" for solo tenor, to Marini's sensuous sonata for three violins and Monteverdi's spectacular "Lætatus sum" for six singers, two violins, two trombones, and bassoon over a repeated four-note bass. There is so much excitement here that even the opening of "Lætatus sum"--four measures of only the repeating bass--shimmers with energy. --Matthew Westphal

"Christopher Hogwood’s incisive mind regularly leads to strong and imaginative concepts and this, the first of a series of clavichord discs dedicated to Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, is a perfect example. The clavichord has a history of domestic usage, the intimate nature of its utterances seeming both exquisite and slightly enigmatic. Its main mechanical feature of stretching strings gives the player the ‘touch’ to grade dynamics, alter pitch through vibrating and other idiomatic colouring. These are delicate nuances with an instrument of such softness, offered as fleeting gestures, usually for the player’s ears alone." - GRAMOPHONE

F.J.Haydn - Divertimenti a 8 voci (2 vols.)

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - 2 RAR (+Mb)

It is tempting to imagine that had Prince Esterhazy been a keen spoons player I might now be reviewing Haydn's Spoons something or other - and brilliant it would have sounded too. However, Haydn's employer was a great lover of that otherwise obscure member of the viol family known as the baryton, and so the composer was set to work to compose music for the Prince to play. Amongst them are these octets which bear witness to the astonishingly high skill of the Court musicians, other than the Prince. The works are for eight obligato parts, and each instrument is individually put to the test. However, the baryton plays on its own very rarely, and so in the event of any Princely hesitation no essential part of the music would be missing! The writer of the sleeve notes describes the octets as "high points of Papa Haydn's compositional skills...halfway between chamber music and the larger symphonic forms", and I'm not going to argue with that. Well worth treating yourself to if you fancy something a bit different by one of the musical giants.

Johann Joachim Quantz - 7 Sonatas for Flute

21 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 110Mb

Johann Joachim Quantz was the most important flute virtuoso of the eighteenth century. Best known today for his Essay on Playing the Flute (Berlin, 1752), he wrote some two hundred sonatas for flute and continuo, about forty trio sonatas for two instruments and continuo, six quartets for flute, violin, viola and continuo, and some three hundred concertos for flute and strings. Many of these works were composed for King Frederick II of Prussia, Frederick the Great, himself an accomplished flautist and composer whom Quantz taught and later served as royal court musician from 1741 until his death. In addition, the eight surviving flutes by Quantz were probably all made for King Frederick.
