George Frideric Handel - Concerti Grossi Opus 3

Here, in my humble opinion, we're talking about the Encyclopedia of Concerto Grosso: everything one wants to know about this musical form is depicted in these masterpieces courtesy of the Caro Sassone. So I decided to scout the net trying to find out some interesting versions of this masterpiece.

OK, Richter's recording could wrinkle some noses but please consider that it happened in 1971 and anyway this is the first version I ever listened to so I'm pretty partial about it.

Gardiner's is for Giovanni & Gustavo (if my memory's good).

Egarr's is really good and I posted it before.

Pinnock's is a Classic (Capital "C")

Lamon's is a mouthful of fresh air.

Harnoncourt's is what you expect...

Goodman's is my favourite, listen to it and let me know... let's start.

  2. For me the best is:
    Munchener Bach-Orchester
    dir. Carl Richter
    1971.
I also first time heard this version so it's my favorite...
and this version is really practic, all Handel's concertos grosso are on one place- on my desk!!!
Thank's Bibixy your blog is really fantastic, I am young I have only 16 years :] so my perents don't like classical music and they don't gave me money to buy cd-s
So I have your blog for free classical music :]

  3. Hi Bibixy,
thanks again for your great efforts to present some baroque gems here. Handel op. 3 really counts to my "lonely island collection".
Up to now I favored Trevor Pinnock for this, now I'm very curious to hear Goodman, a very fine musician too.
    Thanks and greetings!

  4. Nice comparison, I like most the Tafelmusik-Version, but also Minkowski is very good, would be nice to have that version also

  5. I approach from an Andrew Manze/Richard/Egarr perspective; so I immediately admit my bias!
But extreme respect for posting individual enterpretations to let us compare and make up our own minds (in spite of the critics)...

  6. Although I always thought that the Pinnock performance would be best the Egarr rivales it. Unfortunately too many woodwinds in these Opus 3. Haendel did write better Concerti Grossi

  7. Thank you for this nice collection!
    :)
Just a minor problem: the booklet link for the Harnoncourt edition is dead.
