Bach - Cantatas (Montreal Baroque)

4 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 615 Mb

This is a very nice set of Bach cantatas recently put out by the Baroque festival in Montreal, Canada under the direction of Eric Milnes. Eric Milnes follows the school of thought with that of Joshua Rifkin and Andrew Parrot of the Taverner Consort and Players in which he uses one voice per part. The playing is tight and crisp and very clean, the use of continuo is tasteful, particularly in the organ - much lighter than Rifkin's approach on his older Bach recordings and not as heavily improvised and ornamented as Ton Koopman's realisations. The singing is very nice and clean with tasteful ornamentation and reminds me of the better Koopman recordings and sounds lighter than the dark and very "Germanic" sound of the Harnoncourt recordings (a favourite of mine)- more akin to John Eliot Gardiner's recordings. Bal Kan - Honey and Blood

3 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 341 Mb

The name of the Balkans has an unusually graphic etymology. Having discovered the beauty of this pivotal part of Europe and experienced the ruggedness of its people (who put up fierce resistance to invasion), the Turks chose to describe the region with the words Bal (Honey) and Kan (Blood). Never was there so apt a metaphor. On this new set from Alia Vox, Jordi Savall presents an ambitious program that explores the length and breadth of a region that has always had more than its share of human and historical drama. Joined by guest musicians from the Balkan region, Savall traces the cycles of life, structured around the four seasons of the year and the corresponding seasons of human life.

Antonio Soler - Sonatas for harpsichord (Complete)

13 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 1.87 Gb

Owing mainly to the tireless efforts of the late Father Samuel Rubio and other editors in making his works available in print during the past forty years, Padre Antonio Soler is now justly regarded as the most important composer active in Spain during the second half of the eighteenth century. Spanish folk-song and dance elements, as well as virtuoso effects, such as repeated notes in the left hand against wide leaps and hand crossings in the right, feature prominently in the 150 Sonatas.

G.F.Handel - La Resurrezione, oratorio, HWV 47

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 220 Mb

Such stalwarts as Christopher Hogwood, Marc Minkowski, John Eliot Gardiner, and Nicholas McGegan tackled Handel's early oratorio La Resurrezione before Emmanuelle Haïm, but hers may well be the most passionate performance of the once-rare work yet recorded. Part of the reason is Haïm's own fiery nature. Nothing here is merely filler: every aria, recitative, and interlude is played for maximum musical and emotional value. Part of her success is due to Haïm's choice of soloists. While some listeners might wish soprano Camilla Tilling brought more strength to her part, she and the other four soloists bring plenty of intensity to their singing. All of them, particularly Luca Pisaroni as Lucifero, make the most of every opportunity for virtuoso display and emotional expressivity, and the cumulative effect is close to exhausting. Haïm's orchestra, Le Concert d'Astrée, a sterling group of musicians, is every bit as dedicated to fulfilling the requirements of the music as it is to satisfying the stringent demands of its leader. Recorded in richly detailed and lushly colorful sound, this La Resurrezione deserves to be heard by anyone who likes the work or the composer.

Il Canto delle Dame & Caro Amor

12 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 93Mb

Four of the composers are Italian women of the 17th century, a most favorable time for their gender if the notes are to be accepted. Recordings of Francesca Caccini (1587–1640), the daughter of composer Giulio Caccini, go back as far as 1969 with Max van Egmond on Telefunken; the nun Isabella Leonarda (1620–1704) was also heard in the LP era ( Fanfare 6: 4), and Barbara Strozzi (1619–after 1674) came next (7:2). Another nun, Caterina Assandra (fl. 1609–18), can be found on several CDs. The notes say nothing about the inclusion of a brief canon by Giovanni Pietro del Buono, who was noted here just recently on a recording. Eight of the dozen works are vocal, an opportunity for Maria Cristina Kiehr to continue the elegant work she has given us, first as an ensemble singer and for more than a decade as a soloist in Baroque music.

“[Kiehr] has achieved in this recital an even greater sensitivity and subtlety of expression than ever before...It is not just the performances that merit an 'IRR Outstanding' rating for this disc. The works selected and the construction of the whole programme testify to Kiehr's and Aymes's exquisite taste and superb artistic judgement.” (Record Review)

Besides songs criticising their epoch with violent emotion, we find in Carmina Burana graceful love songs, songs of Spring, some based on inner emotions, besides others which are definitely immoral.

W. A. Mozart - Il sogno di Scipione

2 CD - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 165 Mb

FileFactory

Il Sogno di Scipione (K. 126) was written in the summer of 1771, fairly soon after Mozart’s astonishing success in Milan at the end of 1770 with Mitridate, Re di Ponto.
Scholars disagree about whether Sogno was actually ever performed in Mozart’s lifetime.  The piece was originally commissioned to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the ordination of the prince-archbishop of Salzburg, Count Siegmund von Schrattenbach, one of Mozart’s earliest and most important patrons.  However, Schrattenbach died before the celebration and Hieronymous, Count Colloredo was elected to replace him.  Sogno’s score shows that Mozart revised his original version changing the references from “Sigismondo” (Siegmund) to “Girolamo” (Hieronymous) in a new aria for Licenza that comes at the end of the piece, but no contemporary evidence has been located testifying to an actual performance of the work although a celebratory cantata was performed in 1772 which may have been Sogno, although we know nothing of the soloists involved.
DeCaffarrelli

The Roman commander Scipio Aemilianus has a dream in which he is forced to choose between the two goddesses Fortune and Constancy. Lisa Larsson (Fortune) and Malin Hartelius (Constancy) are well contrasted as the two competing goddesses. Larsson is all spitfire pyrotechnics while Hartelius exudes grace and charm. The rival recording on Philips has Edita Gruberová and Lucia Popp in these roles – both on excellent form. It also has a fine Scipio in Peter Schreier, who is marginally better than Bruce Ford in this killer role, though both sound strained in places. The supporting cast is good, especially Christine Brandes, who gives us both versions of the final aria. What clinches the matter is the superbly thrusting accompaniment from Gottfried von der Goltz and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra which makes Leopold Hager on Philips seem very tame.

De Fragilitate - Piae Cantiones

22 tracks - MP3 192 Kbps - RAR 130Mb

FileFactory

The Piae Cantiones (1582) is Finland’s one and only collection of early music and reflection of Europe’s medieval musical heritage. Zefiro Torna performs these beautiful carols, devote and student songs with 15th-16th century instruments and includes a children’s choir. The discrete but charming use of a kantele introduces a Finnish-ing touch to the sound.

The majority of the compositions belongs to the Germanic-Bohemian cantio tradition. There are also links to French, Spanish and Italian sources and to Flemish masters such as Jacob Obrecht. The religious songs — the majority being Christmas songs — are grouped together according to the liturgical year. The remaining songs deal with the transitory character of earthly life, the human condition, the life of schoolchildren, Biblical subjects and the rebirth of Nature in the spring.

Very few collections of music from the 16th century are so strongly anchored in contemporary musical life as the Piae Cantiones are in Finland today, becoming a fixed part of Finnish choral and religious music with the flowering of Finnish nationalism and romanticism in the early 20th century. Variants of these cantiones can be found in Finland’s religious folk music, whilst many composers have also made arrangements of the songs, including Jean Sibelius in his ‘Carminalia’.

“These 24 of the 74 songs from Piae Cantiones form not only a wonderful programme, permitting a variety of styles ranging from pure medieval to rustic and folksy but are also delightful performances….There are delicious and always aptly chosen instrumental contributions, including local colour from the Finnish kantele, and the children sing disarmingly with an ardent, earthly grace, like angelic urchins….”

International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

FileFactory

“Violence against women and girls takes many forms and is widespread throughout the globe. […] On this International Day, I urge governments and partners around the world to harness the energy, ideas and leadership of young people to help us to end this pandemic of violence.  Only then will we have a more just, peaceful and equitable world.” Ban Ki-moon (UN Secretary-General)  (link to the whole message)

By resolution 54/134 of 17 December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designed to raise public awareness of the problem on that day. Women's activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981. This date came from the brutal assassination in 1960, of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).

Since the early days, Christianity has shown a reverence and respect towards virgins, usually young girls who rejected the advances of the occupying Roman forces, arguing that they were instead married to Christ. Often, these girls were raped, tortured and crucified by the authorities, and such atrocities extended through the Dark and Middle Ages and beyond, in cultures all over the world.

This stirring new CD sets Gregorian, Ambrosian chant and two episodes from the life of St Agnes, creating a musical memorial to female victims of violence and abuse, raising a plea for freedom, respect and peace to be established in today's world. Poems and texts by Tehlia Lieberman and Marthe Link, read in English, punctuate the chants, and there are moving accounts by women raped in Central Africa and girls forced to enter homes for single mothers and give up their children.

The Gregorian Schola Karolus Magnus from Nijmegen (the Netherlands)  & Brilliant just released their latest CD “The Martyred Virgins: A Gregorian memorial to female victims of violence”.  It features Gregorian music interspersed with spoken words (in English) describing violence against women, historically.   The CD is accompanied by a booklet of 48 pages with text in English, Latin and Dutch.  On it, one can also hear parts of the testimonials of three Rwandan women who were profiled in “The Men Who Killed Me” (Adela, Marie Jeanne and Clementine).  The music is intended to be a tribute to all women all over the world who faced or are still facing violence.

According to the producers: “[It] Started as a project honouring Saint Agnes and all other female martyrs venerated in the Catholic church, it grew into a sung monument in which violence against all women is commemorated.  Typical here is that ‘Martyred Virgins’ does not only honour the women who died for their faith, nor only the women who were physically violated because they believed.  The ‘Martyred Virgins’ is also a monument for the woman and her role in today’s society.  And thus the Schola veers off into a different direction: the old Gregorian chant serves today’s needs.”

On March 8, International Women’s Day, the Schola began a tour through the Netherlands to raise awareness of violence against women.  For more information about the Gregorian choir and the CD, see THIS LINK.

The CD (8 euros) can be ordered by sending an e-mail to mr. J. Bernards (janbernards@kabelfoon.nl) or through Amazon ($6,99) via THIS LINK.
