Mentioned by Dante amongst 'the most illustrious poets of his time, Thibaut de Champagne (1201-1253), also called 'Thibaut the Songwriter', was one of France's greatest trouvères (or 'musician-poet' in langue d’oïl). He left us some sixty songs, cultivating highly varied musical genres: songs of love and of the crusades, pastourelles, hymns to the Virgin, jeux-partis… Count of Champagne and King of Navarre, grandson of Marie de France and great-grandson of Eleanor of Aquitaine,he was chosen by the Holy See and numerous barons to lead a new crusade in 1239. A seal from 1226 portrays him on horseback, brandishing his sword. This disc proposes an anthology of his compositions, all coming from the very famous songbook copied at the end of the 13th century: the 'King's manuscript'. As a counterpoint to the songs and in harmony with them, it also presents motets and instrumental dances representative of the musical repertoires of the period.

The importance of Georg Christoph Wagenseil (1715-1777) in the development of the classical symphony cannot be underestimated, and his concertos were also significant in the development of early Viennese classicism. As its chief representative, Wagenseil unites Italian, French and German stylistic elements in his works, as was typical of the early 18th century.

The Six Quartets for Low Strings occupy a special position in the chamber music of Wagenseil, simply by virtue of their unusual scoring and the type of classical four-movement quartet that was just coming into being. The two upper parts can be performed by either two cellos or two violas, as desired; the lower parts are played by a cello and a double bass.

Both variants, equally attractive in sound, can be heard on the present double CD.

The Piccolo Concerto Vienna under the direction of the double bassist Roberto Sensi introduces music to us that is notable, not least for a typically Viennese quality: charm.

The music talent of the Italian composer Giacinto Calderara (1729-1803) was already apparent during his childhood. Young Calderara started forming his own musical thoughts from an early age and soon started coming up with the compositions which made a name for him far beyond the boundaries of his home town. Caldrerara was just twenty years old when he was given the respected and coveted post of music at the cathedral in Asti. Calderara's Ricimero was staged more than twenty times after its premiere performance and a modified version of his opera was staged in Asti, Casale and Monferrato, Turin and Ivrea in 2003 during festivities commemorating the two-hundred anniversary of the composer's death.

Mercoledì 12 marzo al teatro Municipale è stato rappresentato "Ricimero" (...) Ricimero aprì, il 27 dicembre 1755 la stagione al Teatro Regio di Torino e trionfò per ben 21 repliche. L'evento di mercoledì 12 marzo è stata l'occasione per ascoltare le belle voci dei cantanti lirici che indossavano sfarzosi costumi di Roberto De Valle tratti dal repertorio dei rinomati figurinisti Caramba ed Eugenio Guglielminetti; l'orchestra della Compagnia d'Opera Italiana magistralmente diretta da Maurizio Benedetti e il narratore Mario Brusa.

It is impossible to be absolutely sure when and for which occasion Bach created these arrangements. The solo concertos have come down to us in a single autograph manuscript which was compiled around 1737-39. However, it is quite possible that the arrangements were made earlier, and in that case Bach may have performed them in his capacity as director of the Collegium Musicum. Research has shown that Bach changed the procedure of transcription while working on them. The transcriptions of the concertos BWV 1058 and 1059 are the first, and here the right hand plays the solo part of the original concerto with the left hand doubling the basso continuo line. In the other concertos Bach adds embellishments to both hands. Sometimes he completely rewrote the basso continuo part and in some concertos also the string parts.
