This is essentially small, intimate music, so perhaps it is best not to make too much of it. Still, there is something seductive about these little lute pieces by Pierre Attaingnant (1494-1552), a contemporary of Rabelais who obviously shared that immortal author's excitement over being part of an age when the sheer joys of being human were about to be rediscovered. From his cramped printing shop in the Left Bank, not far from the Sorbonne, Attaignant produced quiet yet extraordinary music for the lute. Hopkinson Smith, without doubt the finest lute player in the world today, here follows his explorations of Iberian lute music with this revealing glimpse at the sounds of the Paris of Rabelais. Well, how to put it? It's obvious you may not agree with me but in my opinion this concerto is the "perfect baroque concerto". Some composers move more, there are pieces that give me sheer joy or bliss... still the overall quality of this composition is so constant from bar one of the first movement all through to the end of the third, that I decided to nominate Tomaso Albinoni's Concerto per Oboe in re minore Opus 9 n°2 as Best Instrumental Work of the Baroque Era.

Here I give you several rendition of this masterwork, from wonderful to, ehm... so and so, played with modern and authentic instruments, and so on...

I hope you will allow me this little and harmless game.

Jiří Družecký (German: Georg Druschetzky, also known as Giorgio Druschetzky, also Druzechi, Druzecky; born in Jemníky near Pchery, April 7, 1745 – June 21, 1819) was a Bohemian composer, oboist, and timpanist.
He studied oboe with the noted oboist and composer Carlo Besozzi in Dresden. He then joined the band of an infantry regiment in Eger, with which he was later stationed in Vienna, Enns, Linz, and Branau. In 1777 he was certified as a drummer. It is believed he started writing music in the 1770s, most of it for his band. He also wrote chamber music and music for orchestra, including 27 Symphonies and Concertos for various instruments. Druschetzky is credited with one of the earliest uses of the BACH motif.
