The greatest opera Handel NEVER wrote ... 'Un opera immaginaria', assembled from Handel’s own music by French musicologist Ivan A. Alexandre, is a new take on the formula perfected by the composer, the Baroque era’s acknowledged master of music theatre.

“It seems that, in the years around 1720, when people went to the opera to hear a castrato idol or an adored soprano, they would play cards, pay court to their neighbours and savour sorbets during the recitatives – even during the so-called arias of action, which they enjoyed less than the ornamented reprises of the showpiece arias. With this intractable and hedonistic audience in mind (so different from people like us, of course), thirteen star singers came together to concoct this festive piece, constructed and presented in three acts like a true dramma per musica, but with no explicit story and no concrete characters: in other words, an imaginary opera formed of passion and music. It is also a salute to the composer, who died on 14th April 1759, a quarter of a millennium ago – and to the opera-loving public, deprived of sorbet, but not of pleasure.”

This ‘imaginary opera’ , starts with an overture, and leads through a varied sequence of recitatives, arias and duets to a final chorus. In three distinct parts, it follows the dramatic scheme of a typical Handel stage-work, moving from optimisim and brilliance to tragically laden crisis before resolving itself with heroic vigour. It features such characteristic devices of Baroque opera as a ‘mad scene’ (‘Ah! Stigie larve’ from Orlando) bravura arias (among them, ‘Venti, turbini’ from Rinaldo), and the illustrative aria (‘Così la tortorella’ from La resurezzione, in which the flute imitates the call of a dove. Other works represented in this ‘imaginary opera’ include Alcina, Giulio Cesare, Serse, Teseo and Amadigi.

The Italian early music ensemble Modo Antiquo travels, so to speak, on two different rails: Under the directorship of Federico Maria Sardelli the group has produced a number of Vivaldi and Corelli recordings for labels such as Tactus, Opus 111 and cpo - recordings which have been highly praised by the critical press. Under the directorship of Bettina Hoffmann, Modo Antiquo here acquaints us with the fruits of its labours in the medieval repertoire during the 1990's. CD 6 ("Danca Amorosa") was recorded in 1994 and released soon after by the French label Opus 111. This is a superb recording. 16 Italian dances (unfortunately, the Brilliant Classics edition gives no sources) are here played on an endless list of historical instruments (recorder, gemshorn, chalumeau, crumhorn, fiddle, rebec, tromba marina, cittern, lute, portative organ, cornemuse, bagpipes, harp, darbukka, nakers, drums, bells, jew's harp ...); the recording was made in the Santa Maria Casa church, Vecchio, San Casciano, Italy, and produced by Klaus L. Neumann and Yolanta Skura, the whole being a co-production with the WDR, the state radio in Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany. Perhaps this explains the excellent sound quality and the audible professionality of this disc.

CDs 1 and 2 "Carmina Burana" were recorded next, in Florence, in the Oratorio di San Francesco Poverino. With Elena Cecchi Fedi, Lucia Sciannimanico, Paolo Fanciullacci and Marco Scavazza, a vocal quartet was added, assisted by F. M. Sardelli, Ugo Galasso, Gian Luca Lastraioli and Daniele Poli. The Carmina Burana is a collection of religious and secular songs from 13th century Benediktbeuren (Germany), and here a selection of these is sung with uncommon vivacity and energy; the drinking songs really do sound as though they were recorded in a medieval tavern, drunken cries and all. The instrumental accompaniment is extremely colourful; however, I had the feeling that the singing did not quite match up to the achievement of Catherine Bott and Michael George on the 4 CD Carmina Burana set by Philip Pickett and his New London Consort on Decca. The sound, though doubtless good, needed a little getting used to: the solo voices seemed rather too soft in comparison with the loud instrumental passages. The exceedingly energetic use of drums and bells may mean that this recording is not for those who have weak nerves; however, I can imagine that it would appeal to many young people who have recently begun to get interested in the medieval music scene. These two CDs were never available commercially elsewhere; they originally appeared as a free gift with an Italian music magazine.

In September 1999 the fifth CD was recorded, "French and English Instrumental Songs in the Middle Ages". As with "Danca Amorosa" there is here a wide range of medieval instruments to be heard; the dances are from manuscripts kept in London, Oxford and Paris, and despite their well-known names, I have not heard them on other medieval recordings before, which gives this box an additional repertoire value. The sound quality, although still good, does not match up to the brilliant recording on the sixth CD.

The newest recordings to be heard here were made in the year 2000. Again in Florence (Chiesa della Compagnia, Calenzano), Modo Antiquo recorded songs and instrumental pieces which are associated with the crusades. Most of these pieces are, as one would expect, by anonymous composers, but we do also learn of Thibaut de Champagne, Le Chastelain de Couci, Chardon de Croisilles de Reims, Huon d'Oisi, Guiot de Dijon, Riccardo di San Germano and Walter von der Vogelweide in addition to King Richard Lionheart whose "Ja nuns hons pris" opens the second of the two CDs. The soprano part here is sung by Santina Tomasello. Here, too, the arrangements are very colorful and reflect differing moods from sadness and wistfulness through to exaltation and joy. The first CD begins with a version of "Crudifigat omens" from the Carmina burana, but in an unparalleled arrangement: It is sung so loudly, and the drums and cymbals are crashed so aggressively, that I was almost afraid that my loudspeakers would be damaged. Thankfully, the other tracks of these two CDs are played much more sensitively, leaving a very positive impression in the end, even if I still think that some of the effects here are a trifle overdone.

The Brilliant Classics edition is offered at an extremely low price, and this should motivate everyone who is interested in medieval music to purchase immediately. The booklet is only in English and contains two essays but no texts whatsoever, so that anyone who wants to understand something of these admittedly difficult texts will be forced to look elsewhere. - The individual CDs are held in lightweight cardboard sleeves; the box containing the whole is stable and attractively printed.

The sound is ample, generous, but also feverish and plaintive (the instrument is entirely strung with gut strings). Here and there, a few notes vacillate, or seem to get lost in the deeps of the intstrument... But what momentum, what firmness in the dance rhythms! What vehements in the discourse! Louis knows not only the possibilities of his instrument, but superbly masters the expressive power of his music.
His lute not only sings or dances- though it does that, and very well- it also lives, it breathes, it speaks! Is that not the most divine rhetoric? If the technique of Hopkinson Smith may seem more sophisticated, that of Louis has no equal to tell the story with ease and spontaneity.

The 18th century Italian comic intermezzo, originally inserted between the acts of serious operas, won enormous contemporary popularity. The present release includes an example of the form from the now largely neglected Neapolitan composer Domenico Sarri in which lovers quarrel and are re-united. Mirena e Floro was the work of two composers, Handel’s London rival Bononcini, and Gasparini, one of the leading Italian opera composers of the day. The plot again concerns the quarrels and reconciliation of lovers, who use various tricks and disguises to achieve their ends.

Antonio Cesti was an important composer of the seventeenth century Italian Baroque, particularly in the field of opera. Born Pietro Cesti, he adopted the name Antonio when he joined the Franciscan order. He had already been a choir boy in Arezzo. Although details of his musical training are uncertain, it seems likely he studied with Abbatini, and possibly with Carissimi and Luigi Rossi. He joined the Franciscans in Volterra in 1637, was elected organist of the Cathedral there in 1643, and in 1645 was confirmed as master of music of the Volterra seminary and of the Cathedral.  (continue)

This is a fine Handel compilation that provides a nice overview of his orchestral music with brass instruments, as well as his only incidental score (music written to accompany the action of a play). Christopher Hogwood uses the arrangement that Handel made of the Fireworks Music for normal-sized forces, including strings, which were absent from the original. All the music is played with a fine sense of style, and a goodly bit of the "pomp and circumstance" that Handel above all others knew how to capture in music. --David Hurwitz

Immensely popular during his time and maintaining their appeal today, Corelli's 12 Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, are among the gold standard for the form. They are divided into two sections, one being six concerti da camera and the other being six concerti da chiesa. The informatively written liner notes for this Harmonia Mundi album describe the potentially immense orchestra (for the time) that Corelli may have employed for his performances; this recording, however, uses more modest numbers, taking into account the different needs for the "da Camera" and "da Chiesa" concerti. French-based Ensemble 415 (which takes its name from a common Baroque tuning frequency) is led by its founder, violinist Chiara Banchini. All of the planning and research that went into discovering the right number of musicians and the proportions between them pays off in this richly colorful, masterfully balanced performance. The double basses (five for chiesa, two for camera) provide a deep, powerful foundation upon which the rest of the strings, archlutes, and harpsichords weave a diverse blend of tone colors, textures, and dynamic layers. The precise, energetic playing by the concertino offers a nicely contrasting but not underpowered counterpoint to the more powerful full orchestra. Intonation, ornamentation, brilliantly divergent tempos, and articulation are all well thought out throughout the two-disc set. Harmonia Mundi's sound is detailed, warm, and crystal clear.
